Blood on the steps: reality of war at the MOD

This morning at 8 am, staff arriving at the MoD on Whitehall were met by a "Die In" against the war on Iraq. 15 protestors from ARROW (Active Resistance to the Roots of War) painted "No War" on the pillars at the entrance and lay down on the steps, covering themselves in fake blood, simulating the impact of the war currently being planned in the MOD.

After lying there for an hour the protestors then found new life, making their way to Downing Street, where they staged another "die in" for aboutr 30 minutes.

Gabriel Carlyle, a communication support worker, 27, said "Attacking Iraq risks killing tens, or maybe even hundreds of thousands of civilians. Indeed according to Oxfam ' military action could devastate the lives of millions of people and trigger a humanitarian catastrophe.

The action was organised by a quick phone round of a dozen anti war activists, more actions are likely this week, regardless of whether the war starts or not. For photos call 0845 458 2564 /0794 783 9992 and see www.j-n-v.org

PRESS RELEASE:

'BODIES' OUTSIDE RAF STAFFORD SHOW THE REALITY OF WAR

In a peaceful and dignified action, eight local people today drew dramatic attention to the fact that an attack on Iraq could lead to the deaths of military forces and innocent civilians on the same scale as the Gulf War of 1991, when an estimated 100,000 Iraqis died. Shortly after 8.00 a.m., as traffic was pouring in and out of the base, five of the group lay down in positions of death on half of the entrance road. Salt poured round the 'bodies' produced a series of graphic images of death on the tarmac.

The action was one of many 'die-ins' being held today throughout the country (see Justice not Vengeance  www.j-n-v.org). A letter was handed in to an RAF representative, emphasising that 'our main concern in taking this action, which is one of many nation-wide, is to demonstrate to the government the depth of opposition to its policy' and saying that 'we therefore again plead with you to urge your superiors to redouble their efforts to persuade our political leaders away from the path to ruin and destruction.'

From their sprawling positions on the tarmac, some of the 'bodies' spoke of their motives:

Gareth Smith: 'I am doing this to highlight that it's not just innocent Iraqis who will be killed. We are putting the lives of servicemen and servicewomen at risk.'

Rev. Malcolm Carroll: 'The Pope and the Church of England are against this war. Nothing Tony Blair or George Bush have said meets the conditions for a 'just' war which the churches have thought through for centuries. No one is going to tell me that as the one third of remaining oil supplies can be secured via Iraq the Americans do not have an eye on that.'

Nigel Hill: 'Tony Blair will not support us - he supports the Americans. Whilst they have a vast military machine, we've only got our bodies and our voices. If a small group can do this, what could 100,000 achieve?'

Roger Oldfield: 'Whilst lying in our corpse-like positions we have chatted with personnel from the base and with security police, and they have been very courteous. The representative from the base said that all our letters are being passed to his superiors at Headquarters Strike Command for their consideration.'

Police from the base rerouted traffic in order to keep it moving. The action lasted for about two hours. There are plans for more local actions of a similar type if Iraq is attacked.

Groups from Stafford are travelling this weekend to two national
demonstrations. The first is at USAF Fairford, in Gloucestershire, where American B52 bombers set to bomb Iraq are based (anyone interested should ring Nigel Hill on 214902). The other group will go to Menwith Hill in Yorkshire, the communications centre which will play an important role in war - some participants will be flying aluminium kites in an effort to disrupt communications (anyone interested should ring Malcolm Carroll on 212270).

In the meantime Stafford Peace Council is appealing to the people of Stafford to go to the Market Square at 6.00 p.m. the same day if war is declared, and at 6.00 p.m. the next day if war starts after 4.00 p.m. Demonstrators are invited to bring candles. Some participants are planning to hold a silent vigil for peace.

Aber made aware of death, mourning and pain of war.

Members of the Aberystwyth Peace Network today (Monday, March 17) held a Die-In at the bottom of Great Dark Gate Street to show their opposition to a war against Iraq.

A dozen members participated in the event to create awareness of what would happen to innocent civilians in Iraq in the event of an un-just war by Britain and America against Iraq.

Pippa Gallop, a member of the Aberystwyth Peace Network and an organiser of the event, said: "The United Nations estimates that 500,000 Iraqi people could die or be injured as a result of this war, and many more would be harmed by disruption to water and food supplies.

"We're drawing attention to what war really means for those who
experience it first hand. It's not glamorous, it means death, mourning and pain."

ARROW/ The D10 group

Britain's military HQ blocked

Anti war activists from ARROW and the D10 Group blocked the gates to PJHQ Northwood, Britain's military HQ for 30 minutes this morning at 8.50 am, as hundreds of staff attempted to enter the base, planning headquarters for Britain's war with Iraq.

The actvists who were carrying a banner reading Obstruction for Peace were Gabriel Carlyle and Sue Brush of ARROW and Ippy Dee and Anselm Heaton of the D10 Group.

After they had been in front of the gates for a short while a member of staff at the base arrived and assaulted one of the activists, placing them in an armlock and pushing their face in the ground but he relented when the activists quietly suggested that he should perhaps wait for the police to arrive

The police arrived at 9.30 am, and after a short, friendly discourse, the activists left the base.

ARROW activist Gabriel Carlyle, a mathematician, 27, said "Attacking Iraq is illegal and will ahve a devastating impact on civilians, leading, according to Oxfam, to a humanitarian catastrophe. People all over the country need to turn their dissent into disobedience now and stop this vile war. Staff at Northwood should turn their cars around, go home and play no further part in plotting death and destruction."

Northwood will be the focus of the London end of the Reclaim the Bases weekend being planned for April 5th an 6th. See www.reclaimthebases.org.uk for more details.

Rude awakening for Straw

An anti-war protester has been arrested as noisy demonstrators gave Jack Straw a rude awakening outside his London home.

Holding banners, shouting slogans and blaring air raid sirens, protesters claimed they briefly blockaded the roads surrounding his home in Hanover Gardens, Oval, south London.

The protesters also acted out a die-in at the end of Mr Straw's road, where they dressed in fake blood-stained clothes and blasted air raid sirens as a reminder of the reality of war.

Mr Straw, who usually leaves his house at 7.15am, finally managed to by-pass the demonstrators at 7.45am, organisers said.

The protest was co-ordinated by Pledge of Resistance and is part of a week of non-violent action across the country against the impending war on Iraq.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said one person was arrested for a breach of the peace after 7am and taken to a local police station.

He said: "There was some disturbance and noise and one person was arrested but there was no major riot.

"There were a few police officers - the situation was being monitored from the Yard and has now passed."

Pledge of Resistance was joined by various Stop the War Coalition demonstrators, anti-war individuals and representatives from Arrow - Active Resistance to the Roots of War.

Protest organiser, Nick Buxton, said: "We got the message across that the war is going to have a very huge humanitarian impact and people are angry about this war."

Anti war activists occupying DFID office now!

10 anti war actvists from the Pledge of Resistance are occupying the office of DFID, the Department for Illegal Devastation at No. 1 Palace St, Victoria SW1E 5HE

The activists arrived this morning at 10.10 am and 10 of them walked inside the building carrying banners and placards reading "Department for illegal devastation" and "Resign against war".

Gabriel Carlyle, a spokesperson for the group said, "As bombs drop on
Baghdad again we remember teh devastation caused by the attacks in 1991, attacks which the New England Medical Journal reported a having killed 47,000 children in 6 months due to tyhe spread of disease arising from the destruction of Iraq's infrastructure which occurred then. Barbara Stocking of Oxfam has noted that if Iraq's infrastructure is attacked again, our Government, including Clare Short, will be guilty of breaching the Geneva Conventions."

Peace protestors attacked by thugs on Westminster Bridge on the day war started

Fifty anti-war activists were assaulted this evening on Westminster Bridge by a gang of uniformed thugs. The activists were sitting in the road on Westminster Bridge, when the thugs attacked without warning, applying pressure points to make the activists move. When challenged on their violent behaviour the thugs claimed they were acting on behalf of the Queen and said they were hurting people but they were authorised to. Some of the activists considered calling the police, but realised they had in fact just been assaulted by the police.

Uncowed, the activists have now moved on and are sitting down at Admiralty Arch where they have been joined by many more people.

Richard Byrne, who observed the attacks said, "What we saw was some thugs using pain and violence to enforce their will, much as Blair and Bush are doing in Baghdad. War after war will continue so long as we allow violence to underpin our society. The uniformed brutes on Westminster Bridge are just one of the many ways the state uses violence to promote the interests of the few over the many."

The policing of anti war protests over the last few days has been marred by violent policing, with schoolchildren attacked with truncheons yesterday, and repeated use of pressure points.

UPDATE: The group of activists staged a prolonged sit-down protest in Trafalgar Square from about 8pm until 11pm, stopping traffic.
