IRAQ COMMISSION

The Foreign Policy Centre (a think tank launched by Tony Blair) and Channel 4 have initiated a cross-party 'Iraq Commission' – which hopes to be the British equivalent of the US Iraq Study Group.

The Iraq Commission, jointly chaired by three Lords - Paddy Ashdown (Lib Dem), Margaret Jay (Labour) and Tim King (Conservative) - is examining possible options for Britain's future role in Iraq. (It is forbidden to consider the legality of the invasion and occupation.)

JNV made a submission Iraq - Total Withdrawal and the UN Option - based largely on our analysis of Iraqi opinion polls, arguing for total US/UK withdrawal and a UN replacement force for Iraq.

The Commission itself commissioned an opinion poll which showed distinct differences in opinion between men and women and across the political parties (in unexpected ways). (YouGov, 2272 adults, 5-7 June 2007):
